Cyber-attack on Krauss Maffei

Extortion at mechanical engineering group

According to a report in the magazine Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) about two weeks ago, the Munich mechanical engineering company Krauss Maffei fell victim to a cyber-attack.

According to the report, the company’s computers were infected and shut down. Production had to be shut down because of the Trojan. The cyber-attack mainly affected the headquarters in Munich, smaller locations were spared.

The FAZ further reports that there was also a ransom demand on the company. The amount of the blackmailed money is not known. Krauss Maffei should have informed several security authorities after the attack, including the Federal Office for Information Security.

Meanwhile, the machine and plant engineering company is gradually restarting production. A spokesman said that the company was on the way to normality. Krauss Maffei employs over 5,000 people. According to the company, the group is a leader in the production of machinery and equipment. The focus is on the processing of plastics and rubber. About two years ago, the Munich-based company was taken over by the Chinese chemical group China National Chemical Corporation. An IPO in China is planned in the near future.
